What better way to kick off a 42 day stint covering the 2010 FIFA World Cup than with back to back red eyes. While I dread early morning flights, I failed to properly evaluate the amount of stress imposed by spending all day assessing all the details of packing for a six week tour. In addition the total checked luggage limit of 20kg by South African Airlines was obsurd. Even more ubsurd were the fees. The first four of our crew of 60 were imposed more than $10,000 in excess baggage fees. I managed to leave the kitchen sink behind, my neighbor Erica delivered me to the bus station and I arrived at Denver International Airport in time for a nerve calming cocktail before my 8PM departure to Heathrow.
